Long Range Forecast

Wednesday, October 28, 2009            11:30 AM

THE MAIN RAIN BAND THAT ENTERED EASTERN PA/NJ, SOUTHEASTERN NY ON ACROSS MOST OF SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND AND PORTIONS OF SOUTHERN VT/NH LAST NIGHT IS NOW EXITING OFF TO THE EAST WITH LOTS OF DRIZZLE, LIGHT RAIN AND SCATTERED SHOWERS LEFT IN ITS WAKE…

BUT A LARGE SECONDARY AREA OF RAIN HAS BEEN ORGANIZING ACROSS MUCH OF CENTRAL AND UPSTATE NY THIS MORNING AND IT WILL COME ACROSS MOST OF EASTERN NY, FROM ALBANY NORTHWARD, ON ACROSS VT/NH/ME THIS AFTERNOON…

SO WHILE SOUTHERN AREAS OF THE REGION DRY OUT A BIT, NORTHERN AREAS OF NY AND NEW ENGLAND THAT EARLIER LOOKED TO STAY DRY, MAY WELL END UP WITH A WIDESPREAD MODERATE TO HEAVY RAIN THIS AFTERNOON…

Discussion

A late morning update is needed to clean-up a fairly messy forecast.  The large area of rain that entered the region last night from eastern PA/NJ on across southeastern NY, CT/MA/RI and areas of southern VT/NH is now breaking up and shifting offshore.  This does not mean any real improvement across these regions in terms of sunshine, but steady significant rain will be decreasing rapidly.  In its wake, we will see lots of scattered areas of drizzle and light rain, along with chilly raw conditions.

Meanwhile, and somewhat unexpected, a large area of rain has been organizing across central & east-central NY this morning and now looks ready to pivot across much of northern and northeastern NY on across VT/NH/ME over the next 3 to 7 hours.  The thinking had been that these areas could stay mainly dry, but unless this rain area heads due north into Canada, or falls apart, a good soaking is going to occur across eastern NY and much of VT/NH/ME this afternoon and early tonight.  In fact, moderate to heavy rain is already occurring across parts of eastern NY and will be moving into the Berkshires shortly and this on northeastward into VT/NH/ME, as the day progresses.
